Think of "out of control" as a lack of consistency and predictability in the process.
Rule of Seven The rule of seven is a rule of thumb or heuristic. It refers to nonrandom data points grouped together in a series that total seven on one side of the mean. The rule of seven tells you that, although none of these points are outside of the control limits, they are not random and the process may be out of control. The project manager should investigate this type of situation and find a cause.
Assignable Cause/Special Cause varlation This concept is a data point, or rule of seven, that requires investigation to determine the cause of the variation.
Exercise Much of what the exam focuses on regarding control charts is not in the PMBOK'" Guide. Find all the examples of each listed item on the following control charts. Place the item number next to its location on the chart(s). If you are unsure, take a guess and then review the control chart descriptions. The pictures represent two different control charts.
When you are able to pick out all the items on the control charts, you should be ready to answer questions about control charts on the exam.
NOTE: The questions on the exam relating to control charts may be easier to answer if you can picture a control chart in your mind. It is unlikely one will be shown on the exam. Instead, the exam will use the terms in situational questions, and you will need to know what they mean (e.g., A team member tells you that one sample is outside the lower control limit. What do you do?). This exercise is designed to help you visualize control charts and make sure you understand these tools so you can answer questions about them.
Find the following on the charts below:
Upper control limit
Lower control limit
Assignable cause/Special cause
The process is out of control
Normal and expected variation in the process
Rule of seven
Specification limits
Three sigma
Six sigma
Normal distribution curve
